Rhythm Resolutions
Circadian rhythm expert Satchin Panda recently offered some New Year’s resolutions that everyone can use. As shift workers, our timing may look different, but sticking to these guidelines should greatly help us cope with our schedules.

On Exercise Goals
Do you have a resolution to move more this year? If so, set a goal that’s higher than your current baseline, but not too high. That’s the conclusion of a new study on goal setting and exercise.
If the exercise goals become too daunting, people typically start failing to meet them, denting motivation.
Start slow, but adjust your goals regularly so you continue to progress.
Update this goal “at least every week,” he says, upping steps — or time or distance — once you easily exceed your target and dropping the bar a bit if you remain far below. “If you are close,” he says, with the goal still a little distant, “you are on the right track.”

More, No More
Most of us enjoy a level of luxury that exceeds that of royalty only a couple generations ago. Yet happiness remains elusive. Maybe buying more stuff isn’t the answer.
Hedonic adaptation is a hell of a thing. We quickly adapt to our circumstances, maintaining a baseline of happiness no matter what we accumulate or have taken away. It’s as if we have an internal thermostat, and while a big win might momentarily raise the temperature, our air conditioning kicks in, and quickly drags us back to our set point, readying us to start the journey toward feeling warm again.

For(get) Rich Quick
It’s tempting to take large positions in speculative stocks. With market valuations hitting record highs, stories of those who got in early and hit it big are plentiful. But such moves require too much luck, and involve too much risk. Tesla, for example, was as close as a month away from bankruptcy while ramping up production on the Model 3.
Getting rich slowly is the most reliable way. It may be the only realistic way.
